Well, this is it. The last week with the GMM. I’ve been stuffing myself full of sushi, katsu, and udon. These last few days have been a little crazy so I apologize for this short, last update. It’s been a fun couple years and we’ll see what my presence on the site will be in a month or so. Thanks for the times guys.
HOT FUZZ (movie): I was much too excited to see this film. I really liked SHAUN OF THE DEAD and the buzz for this, coupled with some awesome trailers, had me pissin’ my pants in expectation, but It’s not the instant classic I was lead to believe it would be. It’s too much of a Bay spoof and not its own thing. It contained the typical fast edits and gratuitous slow-mo Bay roots around in like a hog in mud. While I’m not a particular fan of Bay, his style works for him and entertains a lot of people. His style used in this movie, where the story is kind of slow and quiet in a lot of places, becomes a little annoying. The ending works though. Methinks they should have used a quieter direction until the end then busted out the overdone direction.
HIGHLANDER: THE SEARCH FOR VENGENCE (Movie): The Highlander mythos is so cool and fun, but unfortunately none of the movies or the TV series has been especially great. This is just another disappointing addition to this elderly guys with swords story. Though, it’s not all terrible. I’m glad Kawajiri was involved. He added some of the best action contained in a Highlander movie. While I think he was a good choice, as someone growing tired with anime clichés, I found myself incredibly frustrated with the combination of Japanese and American film clichés. It was like being blasted in the face with a double barrel shotgun full of tired ideas. Oh, there’s also a moment where the bad guy is hanging out on the top a ludicrously high building wailing away on a guitar. I heartily recommend you avoid this one.
